Come and discuss the visionary work of author Octavia Butler. This novel, while written decades ago, resonates profoundly with contemporary concerns around consumerism, sustainability, and empathy. The talk will introduce students to Butler's foresighted storytelling, which set in the future just one year from now (2025), offers us a critical lens to examine the complexities of Western consumer-driven ideology. Butler invites us to reflect on the potentials of minimalism, empathy and pivotability as tools for survival and transformation in a world marred by environmental and social crises. The talk is not just a literary exploration, but a call to introspection about the world we live in and the future we are shaping and could shape.
The Bellevue Avenue Branch is NOT wheelchair-accessible.
