Between 1919 and 1929, Harlem emerged as the Mecca of Black creativity and progressive ideas. Artists writers and theorists and activists created a Renaissance that manifested the spirit of the "New Negro." Sculptors, painters, and printmakers were key contributors to this first modern Afrocentric cultural movement and formed a black avant-garde in the visual arts. This talk will explore how visual artists found different ways to celebrate African American culture and identity through painting, sculpture and design. It will prepare you well to enjoy The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s extraordinary exhibition, The Harlem Renaissance and the Transatlantic Modernism, which runs until July 28.
