Beginning in the eighteenth century, European nations made significant contact with China and Japan. The result was a wave of enthusiasm for works of art and objects of material culture imported from those countries, and then for European-created products that imitated or were inspired by them. This class will investigate the works of art, including paintings, prints, architecture, ceramics, furniture, and textiles created in this chinoiserie style.
Presented by Anne Betty Weinshenker.
