In the time of pandemic, many of us are missing participating in or watching organized sports, so let's take a look at how different sports have been portrayed in art throughout the ages. We will start with cave paintings that appear to depict sprinting and wrestling 15,000 years ago, and go through to the present day with stunning works lauding our favorite sports heroes. Looking at the history of sport through the lens of the artist’s imagination can teach us lessons about social changes as well as about the nature of sport itself. Even though most of us can’t go to the stadiums to cheer on our favorite teams or experience the camaraderie of playing sports right now, this talk will visually illustrate the excitement, drama, and sense of connection to other human beings that sports gives us.
