For over 150 years, the enslavement of Africans in British North America was gradually and intentionally designed to enforce black subjugation and guarantee white racial power and privilege. Yet, American popular culture and common perceptions of our history often depict American slavery solely as a 19th century southern institution which lasted only a few decades. These classes will examine America’s colonial history of African enslavement and white racial privilege.
