ABOUT THE BOOK
"Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise." A funny, poignant, and revealing bestselling memoir by the former restaurant critic of the New York Times and the former editor of Gourmet magazine. If you read this book in bed, you'll wake up dying for a midnight snack!
One reader called her "a spy in the house of food." When Ruth Reichl took the powerful job of restaurant critic for the New York Times, she had to resort to kooky, elaborate disguises and personas to avoid being coddled by oversolicitous restaurateurs and maitre d's and capture the city's foodie scene as it really was. Her hilarious antics and take-downs of snobs are only surpassed by her mouthwatering reviews and recipes (it wouldn't be a Ruth Reichl book without them). Reichl's friendships with her regular dining companions, especially her mother's friend Carol who develops health problems over the course of the book and her four-year old son also provide a counterbalance to the heady world of haute cuisine the book otherwise inhabits.
