Join Jeff Yang, author of the recent "The Golden Screen: The Movies That Made Asian America!", for a virtual class exploring five films that have shaped the image of Asians in cinema: 1915's Sessue Hayakawa stunner "The Cheat," 1961's fantastic movie musical "Flower Drum Song," 2000's Ang Lee-directed martial arts epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," 2018's breakthrough blockbuster "Crazy Rich Asians" and 2022's entirely unexpected Disney animated feature "Turning Red." What did these films—out of the nearly 140 explored in the book— say about the changing status of Asians in American culture? Why do cinematic images play such a powerful role in shaping social mores and real-world expectations? Jeff Yang will play clips of each film, discuss their unique importance, and share critical insights and behind-the-scenes anecdotes of how they and the creators and performers behind them emerged and transformed cinema culture. Students should purchase their own copy of "The Golden Screen."
Students must supply their own copy of the "The Golden Screen" (approximately $32).
