Cartoonist, illustrator, and teacher R. Sikoryak will teach participants how to make comics using a 4 panel sequence. Registration suggested, but not required.
In this workshop, we’ll start to make comics by using a 4 panel sequence. Whether you want to make a long graphic novel, or a short comic story, a good place to start is with 4 drawings. 4 panel comics are used in classic strips like Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts, as well as new strips on the web and sites like Instagram. It’s a short format that’s easy to share, but it can include a lot of information, tell a good story, and can be either funny or serious. And they don’t take too long to make! So you can make one 4 panel comic, and then another, and then soon you can combine many of your 4 panel strips to make a longer story. We’ll also talk about the design of comics— and how to make your story more dramatic, more funny, or more entertaining through the pictures. We’ll do some drawing and discuss character styles, panel arrangement, and even lettering, and how those elements come together. Sikoryak will show samples of his own comics and more to provide inspiration.
