Instructor: Janet Mandel
Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas, born only two years apart, were friends, rivals, and at times, antagonists who worked to define modern painting in France. Both artists portrayed contemporary life candidly, sometimes shocking the art world with their highly original visions. This two-part series will acquaint you with the lives of both artists and will prepare you well to enjoy The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s extraordinary exhibition, Manet/Degas, which runs from September 2023 to January 2024. We will see amazing paintings by these modern masters and discover how Manet’s and Degas’ artistic objectives and approaches overlapped and
diverged.
