The Tang dynasty is known as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry, a poetic tradition with an elegant, earthy simplicity that influenced the poetry of Japan and Korea, and even 20th century American poetry. Read translations of jintishi, intricate 4- and 8-line poems of five-syllable lines written by scholar-officials of the Tang, most notably the great poets Du Fu, Wang Wei, and Li Bai, and learn to identify the Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist influences in these beautiful, emotional poems. Then try your hand at writing your own jintishi for the final class.
