Learn about the cultural roots and traditions of Día de los Muertos by decorating your own sugar skulls and making a community altar! Registration required.

The altar will be on display in the Library through the first week of November, so community members can leave their own (nonperishable) offerings and mementos as well.

Meet your facilitator: Ana Maria Nichim Luna Toporek

Ana Maria is a mother of three children, wife, educator, artist, community organizer and a Somatics Coach.  As an Educator, Ana María has spent the last 20 years in the practice of Project Based, self-directed learning that focuses on the Whole Development of the child.  She is part of the Latine community, hailing from the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Her Maya Tzeltal Mexican background is infused with her Jewish-from-the-Bronx roots.  Being bicultural, biracial and of many Motherlands, Ana Maria integrates this polycultural lens through all of her work.  Led by her own Indigenous roots, Ana María centers her work honoring the Indigenous Ways of Knowing of the Tzeltal People. She has created and facilitated various cultural and educational programs collaborating with libraries, museums, schools, community based organizations across New York and New Jersey.

Aprende sobre las raíces culturales y las tradiciones del Día de los Muertos decorando tus propias calaveras de azúcar y haciendo un altar comunitario.

Conoce a tu facilitadora Ana María Nichim Luna Toporek
Nacida en Chiapas, México, Ana María ha vivido, estudiado y trabajado en Estados Unidos durante veinticinco años. Graduada de la New School University de Nueva York, obtuvo un máster en Educación Holística y obtuvo la certificación para enseñar en el Estado de Nueva York. Trabajó 5 años con organizaciones comunitarias desarrollando programas para jóvenes.

Ana María ha dedicado la mayor parte de su tiempo a educar en casa a sus 3 hijos. En los últimos 15 años, ha entrelazado su vida de educadora en casa con su amor por crear comunidad. Su trabajo ha abarcado un creciente espectro de ofertas comunitarias a través de la creación de cooperativas de aprendizaje, diversos talleres, clases, eventos, ayuda mutua, así como otras oportunidades educativas, que acercan las artes
y la cultura a diversas comunidades. Ha facilitado celebraciones del Día de los Muertos en Columbia Británica (Canadá), Newark y Montclair (Nueva Jersey). Ser mexicana de nacimiento, con una mezcla de culturas maya tzeltal y judeoamericana, le ha aportado una perspectiva única en torno a la identidad cultural. El trabajo de su vida está lleno de sus raíces, que la guían hacia la construcción de puentes que puedan crear una comprensión más profunda, respeto y comunicación abierta en celebración de nuestra diversidad humana.
