ABOUT THE BOOK CLUB
If you like everything bagels, you'll probably like The Everything Book Club. We read the best of fiction and non-fiction, literary novels, mysteries, historical fiction, memoirs and more.
We generally meet on the third week of the month at two convenient times and venues: Evening Zoom on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Daytime in Person at 1 p.m. in the Tower Room on the 2nd floor in the cold weather. Registration is required.
ABOUT THE BOOK
A poignant literary memoir by the musician known as "Japanese Breakfast" about coming to terms with her cultural identity and her fraught relationship with her Korean mother through cooking and food. A critically acclaimed longtime New York Times bestseller.
We are holding a community read, Montclair Reads "Crying in H Mart," from April 15 to mid-May. Don't miss our related events, especially the kick off on April 15: Open Book / Open Mind: Michelle Zauner in conversation with Elisabeth Egan at First Congregational Church. The in-person event is sold out and there is no waiting list, but there are still free Zoom tickets available.
Receive a paperback copy after March 28 while supplies last. Click on the links to order the book in print, eBook or eAudiobook on Libby/OverDrive.
"In this story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.
As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band–and meeting the man who would become her husband–her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her."—Penguin Random House
"In losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself.” —NPR
