We celebrate the return of America's Pasttime by watching a baseball movie doubleheader in the first floor auditorium April 7 and April 28. No registration required. See below for a list of the movies we'll be watching.
SHOWING ON APRIL 7
"42" - History was made in 1947, when Jackie Robinson broke the professional baseball race barrier to become the first African American MLB player of the modern era. 42 tells the life story of Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.
"Bull Durham" - *** Rated R *** Catcher Crash Davis is closing in on a dubious record: all-time home run leader for the minor leagues. Trying to continue his career in a very unforgiving sport, Davis finds his contract bought out, and he is sent to the Durham Bulls. Seems the Bulls have a bona fide major league pitching prospect -- Ebby Calvin LaLoosh. The thinking is that with Davis' knowledge of the game he will be able to season LaLoosh and prepare him for "the show." LaLoosh does not know it, but there is another teacher waiting for him. Her name is Annie Savoy and she is the Durham Bulls' biggest fan. Annie is teaching a lot more than just the basics of the game, but it is sport nevertheless. Before the season is over, these three characters swing, strike out, score, and balk.
SHOWING ON APRIL 28
"Fear Strikes Out" - True story of the life of Jimmy Piersall, who battled mental illness to achieve stardom in major league baseball.
"The Pride of the Yankees" - The moving, true story of New York Yankee immortal Lou Gehrig, the southpaw slugger who rose to the very top of the sport, only to be cut down at the peak of his career by an incurable illness.
