"You are young, gifted, and black. In the year 1964, I, for one can think of no more dynamic combination that a person might be.” — Lorraine Hansberry
Towards the end of her short life, Lorraine Hansberry addressed a group of young Black writers with the above statement. Well aware that her own life was nearing an end, she symbolically passed the torch to those whom she hoped would further her dreams of creative freedom, cultural pride, and advancing the struggle for social justice through writing. In this course, we examine Hansberry’s eloquent vision as presented in her reflections, and in three of her acclaimed plays: A Raisin the Sun (1959), The Drinking Gourd (1960), and Les Blancs (1970). In exploring Hansberry’s work, we also ponder her artistic and political legacies in the contemporary era.
