In the “General Prologue” of The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer's “Doctour of Physic” cites his fonts of learning, and includes four Arab physicians: Jesu Haly (Ibn ‘Isa), Razi (Al-Razi, or Rhazes), Avycen (Ibn Sina, or Avicenna) and Averrois (Ibn Rushd, or Averroes)--to this day, Razi and the others are honored as the founders of modern medicine. This talk will trace the journey of Greek and Arabic medical knowledge from scholar to scholar, city to city, translation to translation, to see how it shaped modern scientific medical practice, encouraged research by the likes of Leonardo DaVinci and others...
