In this Leap Into Science workshop, developed by The Franklin Institute, children will explore characteristics of light & shadow by recreating shadow shapes and designing shadow shapes of their own.

In this Leap Into Science workshop, developed by The Franklin Institute of Philadelphia, children will explore characteristics of light & shadow by recreating shadow shapes and designing shadow shapes of their own.

We will focus our exploration on the following two questions:

• How does a shadow’s shape relate to the shape of the object(s) that create it?

• How do the positions of a light, an object, and a surface affect the shape of the shadow they create?

In order to fully participate each family will need the following:

  1. a working flashlight (1 for every 2 people participating)
  2. a flat surface to project shadows onto - this can be a wall or even a large cardboard box
  3. a large white piece of paper that can be taped onto the surface being used
  4. tape (removeable or painters tape works best)
  5. small blocks of various shapes (approximately 12 for every 2 people participating)
  6. challenge cards which will be emailed a few days before the program (3 pieces of 8.5 x 11 paper will be used)
  7. scissors to cut out the challenge cards
  8. extra paper for taking notes
  9. markers or colored pencils

Register once per family.
