This class will examine the critical role that African American women played in what historian Jacqueline Dowd Hall calls “The Long Civil Rights Movement,” beginning in the 1930s. Students will learn about the civil rights activism of Mary Church Terrell, Mary McCleod Bethune, Ella Baker, Rosa Parks, Jo Ann Robinson, Fannie Lou Hamer, Diane Nash, and other African American women who played a central role in demanding Black people’s rights as citizens and as human beings.
