From the dawn of photography, the new medium has been primarily recognized as a pursuit meant for men. From the 1840s, not only numerous camera "brotherhoods" did not accept female members but they also worked actively to discredit womens' work in the field. Despite this bias, women acting as dedicated amateurs, artists, and professionals, played a crucial role in the development and history of photography. This lecture presents female photographers who, in the first 100 years of the camera's existence, in different forms and capacities left their mark on the art of photography.
