What happened to the Vietnamese people after the Vietnam War ended? Left with a country that was war-torn and with a government that ruled with brutality and injustice, Vietnam closed its doors to the world; many people lived in poor conditions, hunger and starvation was rampant and those who fought with the Americans were punished. This resulted in almost two million Vietnamese risking their lives to flee oppression and hardship after the Vietnam War, in one of the largest mass exoduses in modern history. Escaping by boat, many were captured and brutally punished, many were denied asylum in neighboring countries and hundreds of thousands died along the journey. Vietnamese Boat People Podcast was started in Montclair to record the stories of families and individuals who migrated to the U.S. and other nations as part of a mass exodus due to the conditions in Vietnam after the war. Podcast Founder and Chief Storyteller Tracey Nguyen Mang will use the compelling accounts captured by her podcast to shed light on this key Cold War-era migration and examine the legacy of the Vietnamese Boat People in America.
