REGISTRATION CLOSES JUNE 14!! This class has it all: a live outdoor production of "As You Like It" by a beloved local Shakespeare company, a notable Shakespearean scholar to prep you for the play and moderate a discussion of the performance the next day.
Tuesday, June 9, 7-9: Join Prof. Naomi Liebler of Montclair State University at Congregation Shomrei Emunah to talk about the play, one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies. She'll focus on issues of play-making ("All the world's a stage" is a key speech in that play); of gendered representation and of the purpose and aims of comedy in general--to see how well (or not) this play fits the model.
Wednesday, June 10, 7-9. Drive yourself to St. Elizabeth University in Morristown to see the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey perform the play in a beautiful outdoor amphitheater. (Seating is first come, first served, so arrive early. Be sure to bring your own folding chairs and a picnic if you like.)
Thursday, June 11, 7-8. Regroup at Shomrei Emunah to discuss your thoughts and reactions to the performance with Prof. Liebler as moderator.
Special note: The more you familiarize yourself with the play first, the more you'll get from this experience!
Students obtain their own copies of the play. Recommended text editions: Pelican (older editions are fine), Signet, or Arden. Most can be found used. Note: It's always best to get an actual edited edition, E-texts or free downloads are NOT recommended.
